Ceres Gallery New York presents
RAPPORT

A Solo Exhibition featuring new paintings by Pauline Chernichaw
You Left the Room

Above Image: “You Left the Room”, 2020, Pauline Chernichaw, acrylic on paper, 30’’x22’’

Pauline Chernichaw’s solo exhibition of new paintings at Ceres Gallery, draws upon and is inspired by her life experience. Born in Post WWII Germany, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, her art reflects her distinct vision, exploring and referencing a personal narrative.

Chernichaw’s textural paintings, executed, and applied with bold color and active brush strokes, engages, and skillfully invites the viewer to share in a dialogue and visual exchange of ideas and perceptions. Her constructed narratives burst with emotion and meaning.  By way of creating, destroying, and recreating, her paintings take form, emerge, and bring to light a recognizable narrative. Her paintings in the show have all been completed during the Covid-19 Pandemic..

Pauline Chernichaw is included in the roster of artists at the Carter Burden Gallery and Ceres Gallery. She is an award-winning member of The National Association of Women Artists.

Trained in both photography and painting, Pauline Chernichaw studied painting at the University of Miami and Brooklyn College. At New York University and the International Center of Photography she expanded her artistic vision to include photography. Chernichaw is inspired by her friend the Iconic and world-renowned artist, Faith Ringgold, who Chernichaw describes as a breathtaking and powerfully commanding storyteller.

Chernichaw’s paintings and photography are included in private and permanent collections. Her selected exhibitions include  “Re/Location” as-studios-projects NY,“Climbing the Walls” studiotheaterinexile in collaboration with Hudson Valley MOCA, “Metamorphosis” Carter Burden Gallery NY, “Looking for America”, New Britain Museum of American Art, “Contemporary Photography 2008-2018” Site-Brooklyn, “Home” 440 Gallery, “Ugly” the Lazy Susan gallery NY, Galleria Ca’D’Oro, Chelsea, NY, the Art Project, Jersey City, NJ. “Wage On, Women, Art and Money”, the Women’s Caucus for Art and “A Womanhouse or a Roaming House” at the A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. and Newark museum Biennials. She curated the well-received photography exhibition “Out and Out” at Ceres Gallery New York. You can see Pauline and her work online in the YouTube video by composer Margin Alexander, “Breaking Surface” Galleria Ca’D’Oro” and “The Moment” on Vimeo and NY1 news arts reporter Stephanie Simon segment on the Carter Burden Gallery.

CLIMBING THE WALLS

MULTI-MEDIA EXHIBITION
A Collaboration between Studio Theater in Exile and Hudson Valley MOCA
https://www.studiotheaterinexile.com/news/climbing-the-walls-state-of-mind-pauline-chernichaw
JULY 2020_CLIMBING THE WALLS EXHIBIT

Climbing the Walls

was a collaborative project between Studio Theater in Exile and Hudson Valley MOCA that asked artists cross-genres to contribute work – images,  music, monologues, poetry - that explores the ways we are experiencing life now and how we imagine the future. Climbing the Walls was conceived from a desire to create in a time of disorientation and disconnection. We conceived of the project as a way to connect and explore a shift in the moment, ultimately looking both at CO-VID19 and the protests and the social/political interactions.  As more and more people decided to participate we realized how lucky we were to be in an artistic community willing to come together to speak, to listen, to teach, to learn, and to create.   Mara Mills; Artistic Director/Dramaturge   Studio Theater in Exile - www.studiotheaterinexile.com

"Pauline Chernichaw's minimal and pictorial photographic abstractions evoke a sense of visual stimulation, emotive delight and spiritual meditation. By exploring the core of water's life-force, Chernichaw reveals her multi-layered perception and inherent connection to what is "beyond the water's surface. Chernichaw's observant eye gazes beyond the surface of the ocean, ponds, creeks and rivers visually immersing herself in fields of color, line and organic forms. Her water series mirrors an endlessly moving and infinitely shifting water scape."
